• Approval of previous minutes

• Principal’s Message
- Ms. Artime mentioned that the District is closely monitoring Hurricane
Milton and that the school is beginning to prepare/secure the buildings;
which include laying sandbags in areas that may flood.
- Ms. Artime spoke briefly about some of the school’s safety and security
measures. She mentioned that certain protocols are confidential and
cannot be shared with the public.
- World Mental Health Day is October 10, 2024. The Student Services
Department is prepared to provide resources for family and students in
recognition of the mental health day. Counselors will be visiting
classrooms / meeting with students and facilitating discussions related to
mental health.
- Oktoberfest was a successful event
- Hispanic Heritage Luncheons have been rescheduled (October 24th and
October 25th
- Construction is still on-going; contractors are present on campus often
to perform walk-throughs.
- The Media Center’s renovation efforts are scheduled to resume soon; Media
Center will be closed.

• School Improvement Process
- Mr. Rivers mentioned that Phase IV of the SIP (Mid-Year Implementation
Plan) begins October 14, 2024, and will end January 17, 2025. We are
currently in the Impact Review Process. The Impact Review evaluates the
effectiveness of the Action Steps aligned to the 4 focus areas outlined
in the SIP. At the end of the impact review process, we will add two
additional action steps to each area of focus.

• Old / New Business
- Required screenings for grade 6 students will start next week. The
screenings include BMI, Vision, Hearing, and Scoliosis.
- Information about the screenings, including opt-out instructions, has
been sent to parents.
- Dr. Garcia has been collaborating with BLUE Missions Miami, a company
that connects families in Latin America to clean, fresh water and
inspires young people to lead the way to a water-secure future.

• Announcements
- There was some discussion – criteria for students, payments via OSP -
related to the Washington, D.C. trip planned later in the school year.
- Each grade level will participate in Jar Wars to raise money for the
United Way.
- Students will be allowed to wear costumes (following M-DCPS dress code
policy). Donations will be accepted; the proceeds will go to United Way.
- G. W. Carver Middle School will host a Magnet Fair on October 19, 2024;
additional information is forthcoming.
- The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) will partner with students from
Coral Gables Senior High School to work on recycling eyeglasses.
- Students will receive a treat from the PTSA on October 18th (end of
quarter treat).
