The 6th EESAC Meeting of the 2009-2010 school year commenced on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 4:30 pm by EESAC Chair Ms. Linda Belkin. Mr. Ramos read the minutes from the last meeting. Mr. Bueno made a motion to approve the minutes and Ms. Covone second the motion and the minutes were approved. The first item on the agenda was to inform all that the School Improvement Plan Mid Year Review process has begun as the goals are being analyzed and rewritten for language arts, mathematics and science. The respective departments are in the process of comparing the fall and winter interim assessment data to revise and follow the goals. Furthermore, the writing test given to the 8th graders as practice for FCAT Writes shows decent improvement as the school gets ready for the test next month. Furthermore, all 8th graders will be attending a writing workshop in school next week to further assist students with tips and strategies to succeed on the test. Next, Ms. Belkin informed all that on Thursday, January 28th, the school will host Language Arts/Reading Night for parents and students. Various activities engaging parents and students in FCAT reading and writing strategies to implement now, during FCAT and for the summer will be presented. Furthermore, Science and Mathematics Night will occur on February 17th. As Ms. Lebena reiterated to all, department nights are not only to involve the parents, students and community within the school but also to achieve the goals set up under the School Improvement Plan for more parent and community involvement. Next, an update was given that the school is still in search of a third business/community partner. Suggestions for business partners from parents and audience members were welcomed. Mr. Bueno then informed all that the relief efforts for the devastation in Haiti is ongoing. The parents and students were thanked for their generosity and all the items would be picked up at the end of the week. Furthermore, the administration mentioned that no rewards have yet been established or awarded for the winter interim assessment results as the data is being desegregated and being placed into the School Improvement Plan Mid-Year Review. As compared to other local middle schools in the area, Mr. Bueno revealed some results per grade level in each tested subject area and the results were very positive. Furthermore, he was pleased on Science implementing additional labs, programs, resources this year to have higher results. The dates for the FCAT Writes in February and FCAT Reading, Mathematics and Science were shared to all and the school is now focusing their instruction and pace toward succeeding in the exam. Among the preparation was a mock run done by teachers, staff and the students recently during the winter interim assessments. Among other updates by Mr. Bueno included the hiring of extra, additional security personnel and a part time Science lab instructor. Finally, the Universal Studios Trip is being finalized, prepared and perfected for much success at the end of the week. Ms. Covone then made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Mr. Bueno second the motion. The next meeting will be in mid-February.
